The Free Guide to Songwriter Copyright Protection

I'm a guitarist & songwriter in the San Diego area. We have lots of coffee shops in our town that sponsor open mic nights, they're fun and a great way of performing in front of a group and meeting other musicians. San Diego also has world-class guitar shops that book professional players, and Taylor Guitars are all made here. So are Deering Banjos. It's a very music-savvy town.

But -nowhere have I ever seen a simple guide to copyrighting your song. There are a lot of myths about it. Some musicians I've talked to say that you don't have to copyright your song. Wrong.

It’s never been easier for singers and songwriters to copyright their work. After you’ve put a lot of work into a song, treat it the way all professional musicians do – protect it from theft.

You basically want to show that you sang and played your song before anybody else did. Here’s how you do it.
